The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has seriously affected people's normal work, life, and medical treatment. Since Mar. 2022, there has been a pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) omicron variant in Shanghai. In order to meet the needs of hospitalization for patients, and at the same time for better control of epidemic and nosocomial infections, a large hospital in Shanghai innovatively set up a centralized transition ward in the hospital, and established scientific rules of medical work, regulations for prevention of nosocomial infections and efficient norms for patient admission. During the operation of the ward, a total of 211 patients were treated and one of the patients was confirmed of COVID-19 recurrence. All work was carried out methodically, and neither hospitalized patients nor medical staff had nosocomial infection of COVID-19. The preparation, operation and management of the central transition ward in our hospital are summarized here to provide guidance and reference for general hospitals to carry out similar work under the epidemic.Copyright © 2022, Second Military Medical University Press. Objective: To analyze the vaccination status of SARS-CoV-2 in children, and explore the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and COVID-19 in children. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the clinical data of 335 cases of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection from February 15, 2022 to March 18, 2022 in Shenzhen Third People's Hospital. Results: Among 335 children with SARS-CoV-2 infection, 174(51.9%) cases were vaccinated with the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine;33(31.4%) cases were vaccinated in the 3-<6 years old group;141(61.3%) cases were vaccinated in the 6-<14 years old group. There was a statistically significant difference in the proportion of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination between the 6-<14 years old group and the 3-<6 years old group (X2=26.1, P < 0.05). In the study cohort, 3-<6 years old group and 6-<14 years old group, there was no significant difference in the incidence of COVID-19 in the vaccinated group compared with the unvaccinated group (P > 0.05). In the study cohort, the proportion of confirmed cases of 1 dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and 2 doses or more of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine was 89.5% (68 cases) and 77.6% (76 cases), respectively;in the 6~<14 years old group, the proportion of confirmed cases of 1 dose of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and 2 doses or more of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine was 90.0% (54 cases) and 76.5% (62 cases), respectively;the differences were statistically significant (X2=4.264, P < 0.05;X2=4.279, P < 0.05). The IgG levels of 18.28 (6.61, 55.2) AU/mL and 58.3 (25.85, 131.41) AU/mL in the study cohort who were vaccinated for 1 dose, 2 doses and more, respectively;the IgG levels of 20.13 (8.33, 44.33) AU/mL and 56.57 (25.85, 150.07) AU/mL in the 6~<14 years old group who were vaccinated for 1 dose, 2 doses and more, respectively;and the differences were statistically significant (Z=-4.37, P < 0.05;Z=-3.96, P < 0.05). Conclusions: Children who received 2 doses of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine have a lower incidence of COVID-19 and higher levels of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies compared with who received 1 dose. It is recommended that children are advised to be vaccinated against the COVID-19.

Objective. Most respiratory infections have similar symptoms, so it is clinically difficult to determine their etiology. This study aimed to show the importance of molecular diagnostics in identifying the etiological agent of respiratory infections, especially during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods. A total of 849 samples from patients hospitalized at the University Clinical Center Kragujevac (from January 1 to August 1, 2022) were examined using automated multiplex-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. The BioFire-FilmArray-Respiratory Panel 2.1 test was used for 742 nasopharyngeal swabs [identification of 19 viruses (including SARS-CoV-2) and four bacteria], while the BioFire-FilmArray-Pneumonia Panel was used [identification of 18 bacteria and nine viruses] (BioMerieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) for 107 tracheal aspirates. The tests were performed according to the manufacturer's instructions, and the results were available within an hour. Results. In 582 (78.4%) samples, the BioFire-FilmArray-Respiratory Panel 2.1 plus test identified at least one pathogen. The rhinovirus (20.6%), SARS-CoV-2 (17.7%), influenza A (17.5%), respiratory syncytial virus (12.4%), and parainfluenza 3 (10.1%) were the most common. Other viruses were found less frequently, and Bordetella parapertussis was detected in one sample. In 85 (79.4%) samples, the BioFire-FilmArray-Pneumonia Panel test identified at least one bacterium or virus. The most prevalent bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus (42.4%), Haemophilus influenzae (41.2%), Streptococcus pneumoniae (36.5%), Moraxella catarrhalis (22.3%), and Legionella pneumophila (2.4%). Among viruses, rhinovirus (36.5%), adenovirus (23.5%), influenza A (11.8%), and the genus Coronavirus (4.7%), were detected. Conclusion. Multiplex-PCR tests improved the implementation of therapeutic and epidemiological measures, preventing the spread of the COVID-19 infection and Legionnaires' disease.Copyright © 2022, Serbian Medical Society. In this study, we theoretically propose a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor composed of a plasmonic gold film, double negative (DNG) metamaterial, graphene-MoS2-COOH Van der Waals heterostructures and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs). We use a novel scheme of Goos-Hanchen (GH) shift to study the biosensing performances of our proposed plasmonic biosensor. The calculation results show that, both an extreme low reflectivity of 8.52x10(-10) and significantly enhanced GH sensitivity of 2.1530x10(7) mu m/RIU can be obtained, corresponding to the optimal configuration: 32 nm Au film/120 nm metamaterial/4-layer graphene/4-layer MoS2-COOH. In addition, there is a theoretically excellent linear response between the concentration of target analytes (SARS-CoV-2 and S protein) and the change in differential GH shift. Our proposed biosensor promises to be a useful tool for performing the novel coronavirus detection.

Severe COVID-19 patients may develop pulmonary fibrosis, similar to SSc-ILD disease, suggesting a potential link between the two diseases. However, there are limited treatment options for SSc-ILD-type diseases. Therefore, investigating pathological markers of the two diseases can provide valuable insights for treating related conditions. RNA sequencing technology offers high throughput and precision. However, the bimodal nature of RNA-Seq data cannot be accurately captured by commonly used algorithms such as DESeq2. To address this issue, the Beta-Poisson model has been developed to identify differentially expressed genes. Unlike the classical DESeq2 algorithm, the Beta-Poisson model introduces a Beta distribution to construct a new hybrid distribution in place of the Gamma distribution of the Gamma-Poisson distribution, effectively characterizing the bimodal features of RNA-Seq data. The transcriptomes of SARS-CoV infection and SSc-ILD disease in the lung epithelial cell dataset were analyzed to identify common differentially expressed genes of SARS-CoV and SSc-ILD disease. Gene function and signaling pathway enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network were used to identify common pathways and drug targets for SSc-ILD with COVID-19 infection. The results show that there are 50 differentially expressed genes in common between COVID-19 and SSC-ILD. The functions of these genes are mainly enriched in immune system response, interferon signaling pathway and other related signaling pathways, and enriched in biological processes such as cell defense response to virus and interferon regulation. Based on the detection of hub genes based on PPIs network, it is predicted that STAT1, ISG15, IRF7, MX1, EIF2AK2, DDX58, OAS1, OAS2, IFIT1 and IFIT3 are the key genes involved in the pathological phenotype of the two diseases. Based on the key genes, the interaction of transcription factor (TF) and miRNA with common differentially expressed genes is also identified. The possible pathological markers of the two diseases and related molecular regulatory mechanisms of disease treatment are revealed to provide theoretical basis for the treatment of the two diseases. © 2023 Editorial Office of Journal of Shenzhen University. The COVID-19 vaccines provide a high degree of protection against severe disease, hospitalisation, and death. However, no vaccine claimed 100% effectiveness and it is expected that a small proportion of vaccinated individuals may develop a breakthrough infection due to individual differences, virus variants and other factors. We conducted an epidemiological investigation and analysis of an imported case who had finished four doses of vaccination, and in order to provide a relevant reference for regular epidemic prevention and control in the post-pandemic era.

This literature review analyzes Russian and foreign publications over the past five years on the three most discussed issues related to carotid artery surgery: l.Which is more effective: eversion carotid endarterectomy or conventional carotid endarterectomy with patch closure? 2. Which is better: carotid endarterectomy (CEE) or carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS)? 3. How soon after the development of ischemic stroke should cerebral revascularization be performed? The authors of the article came to the following conclusions: 1. According to the majority of large studies and meta-analyses, conventional CEE with patch closure is associated with a higher risk of internal carotid artery restenosis compared to eversion carotid endarterectomy. Single-center trials with small samples of patients do not find statistical differences between the outcomes of applying both surgical techniques. 2. Large multicenter randomized trials are required to address the effectiveness of CEA and CAS in symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. To date, there has been no consensus on this matter. 3. CEE and CAS can be equally effective and safe in the most acute and acute periods of ischemic stroke when performed in the presence of a mild neurological deficit and the ischemic brain lesion not exceeding 2.5 cm in diameter. Nevertheless, the choice of treatment strategy should be made strictly personalized by a multidisciplinary council based on the experience of the institution and current recommendations. © 2023 Sklifosovsky Research Institute for Emergency Medicine. Objective To summarize and analyze the features of liver function in pediatric patients infected with Delta variant versus Omicron variant of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS - CoV - 2). Methods In this study,an analysis was performed for the liver function test results of the locally transmitted or imported pediatric patients with SARS - CoV - 2 infection during isolation who were admitted to Guangzhou Eighth People's Hospital,Guangzhou Medical University, since May 21,2021,and the clinical data and the constituent ratio of liver injury were compared between the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and those infected with Omicron variant. The independent samples t - test or the Mann - Whitney U test was used for comparison of continuous data between two groups, and the chi - square test or the Fisher's exact test was used for comparison of categorical data between two groups. Results A total of 85 pediatric patients infected with SARS - CoV - 2 were enrolled, among whom there were 32 (37. 6%)pediatric patients infected with Delta variant and 53 (62. 4%)pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant, and there were no significant differences between the two groups in age, sex, body height, body weight, and comorbidities (all P > 0. 05). There were no significant differences between the two groups in alanine aminotransferase (ALT),aspartate aminotransferase (AST),alkaline phosphatase (ALP),gamma - glutamyl transpeptidase, total bilirubin, albumin, and cholinesterase (all P > 0. 05),and the pediatric patients infected with Omicron variant had a significantly higher level of total bile acid (TBA)than those infected with Delta variant (Z = - 2. 336,P = 0. 020). However, the median values of TBA were within the normal range and the ratios of abnormal TBA were no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0. 05). Among the 85 pediatric patients,10 (11. 8%)had a mild increase in liver function parameters, among whom 7 had an increase in TBA,1 had an increase in ALT, 1 had increases in ALT and AST,and 1 had an increase in ALP. The analysis of liver injury in the pediatric patients infected with Delta variant or Omicron variant showed that there was no significant difference in the constituent ratio of liver injury caused by the two variants (6. 3% vs 15. 1%,chi2 = 0. 691,P = 0. 406). Conclusion Mild liver injury is observed in pediatric patients infected with Delta and Omicron variants of SARS - CoV - 2,but further studies are needed to evaluate the long - term influence of such infection on liver function.Copyright © 2022 Editorial Board of Jilin University

The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges for scholars and government officials to predict people's evacuation decisions under a conflicting natural disaster. In this study, we examined households' evacuation and shelter intentions given the potential conflicts between the perceived risks from a hurricane and the coexisting public health crisis. We surveyed households living inside hurricane evacuation zones in Florida during the 2020 hurricane season. Data were first used to examine the evacuation and shelter intentions before and during the pandemic. We then measured respondents' hurricane and COVID-19 risk perception, respectively. The impacts of both risk perceptions on respondents' hurricane evacuation intentions were explored. We found that when people felt unsafe to stay home for a Category 2, 3, or 4 hurricane, their intended evacuation was about the same before and during the pandemic regardless of their COVID-19 risk perception. The COVID-19 risk perception, however, significantly lowered the evacuation intention for a Category 1 hurricane. It also significantly influenced evacuees' preference for nontraditional shelters such as government-contracted hotels. The results of our study have practical implications for emergency management and public health governance. Our study also provides insights into decision-making under the conflict between natural hazards and infectious diseases. The immune system is developed to preserve its hosts from an ever-expanding cluster of pathogenic microbes. The elimination of toxic substances, allergens, or any other harmful existences that come in, passing the mucosal surfaces, is as well the responsibility of this special system. Its ability to distinguish self (our bodies' functioning cells and tissues) from non-self is the key aspect to its ability to mobilize some reaction to an invasion initiated by the stranger substances listed above. To identify and kill unsafe microorganisms, the host applies both natural and versatile systems, our innate and adaptive immune systems. Vaccines are used to combat the current SARS-CoV-2 strain by utilizing immune system mechanisms, specifically the adaptive immune system. Vectored vaccines, protein vaccines, genetic vaccine, and monoclonal antibody for passive vaccination are among the vaccine platforms under consideration for SARS-CoV-2. Each vaccine has its own benefits and drawbacks. This paper is written to describe the three major forms of COVID-19 vaccines, as well as the unique mechanisms of elements of the immune system associated with the virus. © 2023 SPIE.

Objective: To summarize and compare the main traditional Chinese medicineTCMsyndromes of Delta and Omicron variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2SARS-CoV-2 carriers to provide references for the syndrome evolution and syndrome differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Method(s):The TCM medical records of imported and local cases of infection with Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 in Changsha since September 23,2021 to March 27,2022 were collected, including 18 Delta variant cases and 36 Omicron variant cases. Their TCM diagnosis information and TCM pathogenesis were analyzed and compared. Result(s): The common manifestations in Delta variant cases were cough, fever, chest distress/shortness of breath, sore muscles, nausea, dry mouth, dry or sore throat, thick and greasy tongue coating, and rapid and slippery pulse. The predominant pathogenesis was dampness-heat in the upper-energizer and heat stagnation in the lesser Yang combined with dampness. The occurrence of chest distress/shortness of breath, greasy tongue coating, slippery pulse, and the proportion of dampness-heat in the upper-energizer syndrome were higher in Delta variant cases than in Omicron variant cases P<0.05. The common manifestations in Omicron variant cases were itchy and sore throat, nasal congestion, running nose, fever, mild aversion to cold, dry mouth, dizziness, slightly reddish tongue with thin white coating, and rapid or wiry pulse. The predominant pathogenesis was wind-dryness invading defensive exterior, and heat stagnation in the lesser Yang. The occurrence of white-coated tongue and the proportion of wind-dryness invading defensive exterior syndrome were higher in Omicron variant cases than in Delta variant casesP<0.05. Conclusion(s): There are certain differences in TCM syndromes and the corresponding pathogenesis between Delta variant and Omicron variant cases in Changsha,Hunan. The Delta variant of SARS-COV-2 tends to induce dampness-heat syndrome, whereas Omicron variant infection tends to elicit wind-dampness syndrome, which is expected to provide a reference for the pathogenesis evolution of SARS-COV-2 infection.Copyright © 2022, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences Institute of Chinese Materia Medica. Wastewater surveillance has been widely used to track the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in communities. Although some studies have investigated the decay of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater, understanding about its fate during wastewater transport in real sewers is still limited. This study aims to assess the impact of sewer biofilms on the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 RNA concentration in naturally contaminated real wastewater (raw influent wastewater without extra SARS-CoV-2 virus/gene seeding) using a simulated laboratory-scale sewer system. The results indicated that, with the sewer biofilms, a 90% concentration reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 RNA was observed within 2 h both in wastewater of gravity (GS, gravity-driven sewers) and rising main (RM, pressurized sewers) sewer reactors. In contrast, the 90% reduction time was 8–26 h in control reactors without biofilms. The concentration reduction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was significantly more in the presence of sewer biofilms. In addition, an accumulation of c.a. 260 and 110 genome copies/cm2 of the SARS-CoV-2 E gene was observed in the sewer biofilm samples from RM and GS reactors within 12 h, respectively. These results confirmed that the in-sewer concentration reduction of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater was likely caused by the partition to sewer biofilms. The need to investigate the in-sewer dynamic of SARS-CoV-2 RNA, such as the variation of RNA concentration in influent wastewater caused by biofilm attachment and detachment, was highlighted by the significantly enhanced reduction rate of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater of sewer biofilm reactors and the accumulation of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in sewer biofilms. Further research should be conducted to investigate the in-sewer transportation of SARS-CoV-2 and their RNA and evaluate the role of sewer biofilms in leading to underestimates of COVID-19 prevalence in communities.

For male, the virus has various negative impacts on testes, including overheating and hormone level fluctuation, which have impacts on the spermatogenesis or spermatogonia development. For female, COVID-19 may increase the risk of endocrine and metabolic dysfunction. However, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the ovaries is not clear, and further researches are needed to clarify it. Nearly 60% of the pregnant women develop symptoms of infection and more attention should be paid to the increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes including preeclampsia, eclampsia, and severe infection. For the newborns of infected pregnant women, vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is still unclear, and further evaluation are required. Meantime, the pregnant women's fear of the potential infection may reduce their access to the prenatal genetic test. In this chapter, we summarize the latest basic and clinical researches on COVID-19 impacts on male, female reproduction, and prenatal genetic test, hoping to provide guidance and advice for people of reproductive age and reproductive healthcare practitioners. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. Objective: To analyze and compare the effects of different clinical characteristics on the negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Omicron variant infection, and to provide a scientific basis for the isolation and treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: The epidemiological and clinical data of 228 mild SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infected patients diagnosed in Shanghai were retrospectively collected from April 27, 2022 to June 8, 2022 in Wujiaochang designated Hospital, Yangpu District, Shanghai. The negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection was used as the outcome variable, and the patients were divided into A (18 days) and B (>18 days). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the influencing factors of the negative conversion time of nucleic acid detection. Results: The mean nucleic acid conversion time of 228 patients was (18.7+or-12.1) d, with the median time of 18 (2-46) d. Among them, 120 patients in group A had an average nucleic acid conversion time of (13.2+or-2.0) d, and 108 cases in group B had an average nucleic acid conversion time of (20.8+or-1.3) d. Univariate analysis showed that there were no statistically significant differences in the effects of hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypokalemia, malignant tumors, neuropsychiatric diseases, chronic digestive diseases on the negative nucleic acid conversion time (P > 0.05);however, there were significant differences in the effects of combined cerebrovascular disease, leukopenia, chronic respiratory system diseases and vaccination on the negative nucleic acid conversion time (P < 0.05). Further multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the combination of chronic respiratory diseases and non-vaccination were significant risk factors for prolongation of negative nucleic acid conversion time (P < 0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study show that gender, age and whether hypertension, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, hypokalemia, malignant tumor, neuropsychiatric disease and chronic digestive disease have no significant effect on the nucleic acid conversion time, whereas chronic respiratory disease and no vaccination are significantly correlated with the prolongation of nucleic acid conversion time in SARS-CoV-2 Omicron-infected patients.

Objective: This study focused on the systematic literature measurement and visual analysis of treating COVID-19 with combined Chinese and Western medicine to explore the development status, research hot spots and trends, and cutting-edge dynamics. It provides data, information support, and development references for treating COVID-19with combined Chinese and Western medicine. Methods: Three major databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Wanfang Data, and China Science and Technology Journal Database were used as data sources to retrieve the relevant literature on the combined Chinese and Western medicine for the treatment of COVID-19 from March2019 to March 2022. Statistical analysis was performed using bibliometric methods and CiteSpace software. Visual analysis was performed on publishing trends, research institution cooperation, author cooperation, keyword co-occurrence and clustering, and research hotspots. Results: A total of 476 articles were included in this study, with the largest number published in 2020. Statistical analysis of published units showed that the cooperative relationship between institutions was discrete, indicating that the research on treating novel coronavirus with combined Chinese and western medicine was extensive. Hot spots in the research were mainly reflected in four aspects:coronavirus, diagnosis and treatment plan, combined Chinese and Western medicine, and epidemic prevention and control. Conclusion: The research theme of treating COVID-19 with combined Chinese and Western medicine dynamically changes with the epidemic development, which is guided by clinical efficacy. It mainly focuses on the formulation of diagnosis and treatment plans. The cooperation between authors and institutions is insufficient, and communication needs to be further strengthened.
